Phil. 3:7-9 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.
Can I ask you a Question?
The Apostle Paul was a Jew who believed that to follow God, to please God he needed to follow strict guidelines as set out by the Pharisees. By following these guidelines, these rules he had believed that God looked down upon his efforts and commended what he did.
But now in our passage Paul tells us that all this he considered as garbage, not worthy of Christ. As Paul put it, he discarded all these practices so he could gain Christ.
So this brings us to ask the question, what am I doing that I need to discard in my life? What am I doing that is not worthy of Christ? What am I doing that keeps me from gaining Christ?
To follow Christ, to be a true disciple of Christ will require you to give up, to discard things you have come value or have come to believe pleases God.
Phil. 3:8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
The easiest way I have found to measure if I am holding on tightly to something that is keeping me from knowing Christ is use a scale. I place on the one side what I am holding on to and then I place “Knowing Christ” on the other. If the scale is tipped to what I am holding on to then I have placed this as of greater worth then “Knowing Christ”. I then have a Choice. Continue as I have or make some major changes in my life and look at discarding what I valued over “Knowing Christ”.
To know Christ is not to know about Christ, but to know Christ means that you know God’s truth are applying God’s truth to your life.
So how are you doing in “Knowing Christ”?
