What's in a Name - Part 1
A name identifies a lot about a person is or what a person will become.
Let's look at Abram who God changed his name to Abraham.
Gen. 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2 that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, 4 “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
God came to Abram and called Abram to be a man of Godly. That is God choose Abram to walk before him in a way that honors God with his life, in everything he would do from this time forward . Abram had a choice, he could continue with is life or deny himself and follow God, follow God's wishes. It was a choice and Abram choose to follow God, to honor God with His life. Abram entered into a covenant with God, he gave a promise to God that he would be a man of God, he would live his life seeking to honor God with his life.
Because of this commitment, this promise, God then tells Abram that he is changing his name from Abram to Abram. He was no longer be to known as "high father" but he was now to be known as "father of a multitude” for God was going to great and mighty things in and thru him.
Abram was given a new identity. An Identity as to what God was doing in and thru him.
