Denison Iowa

Our City:

PictureYellow Smoke Park
Denison is the county seat to Crawford County Iowa. Denison is located in Southwest Iowa about 1 ½ hours to Omaha Nebraska and 2 hours from Des Moines.  Denison is over 8,500 residents and growing. New businesses are moving in and new housing developments are being built.  We have a micro climate in reference to unemployment.  For a number of years, Denison has had 4% or less people unemployed.

Yellowstone Park is one of our County Parks just a few miles outside Denison.  It a favorite place for many residents to walk, run, ride bikes, fish, swim or have a picnic BBQ with the family and friends.

Our History:

The City of Denison was founded by Jesse W. Denison in 1856 in1857.  When it came time to name this new and growing city, the community voted to name the city after it’s founder’s last name, “Denison”.  Humble Mr. Denison accepted this horror and thus the name "Denison".  Mr. Denison understood the importance for any city to be prosperous, the city must have a church, a place for the people to come together regularly to worship God, to fellowship one with another and grow in their knowledge and understanding of God’s word. So one year after the founding of the City, in 1857 Jesse W. Dension founded the 1st Church in the county which is now known as Journey Church.

Cultural Diversity:

Denison has been undergoing some major changes as a community, cultural changes and changes of growth. Within the last 15 years, Dension has changed from a predominate white community to a predominantly multiethnic community.  The Minority populations have been increasing and the Caucasians community that had immigrated from Germany, Norway etc... have been shrinking. Today the largest multiethnic group is the Hispanic community which now makes up 43% of the population. We are now seeing another change with other multiethnic groups moving into the Denison area, refugees from South Sudan which are from the Nuer and Dinka tribes, as well as refugees from Karen tribe from Burma. The positive that is enabling Dension to grow is the openness and excitement the city has in embracing this change and seeing this as a positive development, given Dension as very uniqueness. Most, of course not all see this but and become this new development, seeing each tribe is unique, bringing to Denison a wonderful blend of cultures where we can help them assimilate and learn from them about their culture.

Ministry Opportunities.

Jesus said “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few”.  This what we are finding in Denison, we do not ask what can we do, but instead we are asking what is it we should not do.  We are finding many opportunities for ministry, ministries within the church, ministries within the city and ministries that can easily impact the USA and beyond. We find due to our unique role in ministering to our multi-ethnic community, the truth of Jesus words is our reality "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few".

We feel blessed that God has placed us here in a very important ministry with the support of our community.  We live in a unique environment where everyone is working together for the health of the city and its residents. The city leaders welcome the growth of our multiethnic population and are excited to see the blessing of new opportunities we have as diversified community. The civic leaders in Denison, the leaders in Iowa and even in Washington DC we are being ask to give advise and help to understanding the Culture of our Multiethnic communities with a desire to learn and discover ways to be of help.

The harvest is plentiful...

Jesus has given us commission.  We identify this commission in Matthew as God's Great Commission. This commission is a command, a command to to:
Matt. 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Denison Iowa has a low percent of Evangelical Christians. Denison was founded on Godly principles with a goal of the Church being the foundation for life for the civic leaders. This is no longer true. Having a transformational relationship with Jesus Christ has been replaced to adopting a religious life style.
