Mission To Love God - Totally To Love our Neighbor - Equally
MK 12:28-31 …“Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
The word Love in this passage is translated from the greek work "Agape". "Agape" is the verb form which means love in action. So "Love" or "Agapeo" describes an action of Love, an action that a person is to take purposefully and intentionally, i.e. to Love self-sacrificially.
This passage is best illustrated by this graphic, "Agapeo" God Totally. To Love God Totally is to Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. God is calling us to Love God self-sacificially.
The second part of this command is that we are to "Agapeo", "Love others as we "Agapeo" our self. Love is not identified by ethnic origin, culture, language, sex, financial capability. Our neighbor is anyone whom we come know has a need. This Love is to be shown toward people whom we come in contact with, family, friends, acquaintances and etc... by caring for their needs. This command calls us to show our Love for them equally, or to care for them in the same manner we do for ourself.
We cannot express this type of Love for God or for others until we have been radically changed by God's love. We can only express this type of Love when we invite God into our heart and make Him Lord of our life. Then God begin His work, transforming us, transforming our heart. It is a inside - outside issue. God begins transforming our Inside, and our Outside begins reveling, manifesting this inward transformation by our Outward actions.
